Coaching Your People Through Change - Where Do You Start?

Updated: Aug 31, 2020

When you want to make changes within your business, where is the best place to start? The Science Of Coaching investigates here.

The iceberg model has been used for decades as an organizational change tool.

Where do you think your business should start if you were to make organizational change on the above model?

ANSWER: It depends. It depends on the situation, it depends on the people, it depends on the culture and it depends on the location.

Finding out WHERE, on the model, your people and organization will respond best to create integral change within a business is essential.

For example, initiating a change in behaviour (physical process or procedure) can eventually result in a way of "being" and change a person/ division/ company's identity after a period of adaption.

Giving someone a reason to increase their competency and motivation, can result in a change in behaviour and then way of thinking feeling and being.

How is this related to coaching?

There is a degree of empathetic response required as a business leader to truly understand the needs of your business when making change. Asking your division leaders where their teams sit within this model or ensuring you address all parts of the model, can make what may possibly be a reluctant group into a cohesive change management task force.

For professional Coaches, showing your clients this model and asking them were they would like to start, can help accelerate your Coach\ Coaching Client relationship and enable you to start working on levels they will feel most comfortable with for change.
